To say AfroPunk was an experience is definitely an understatement. For those of you that have never heard of the festival AfroPunk, let me get you a little familiar. AfroPunk is a musical festival that happens in Brooklyn,NY every year since 2005. It is for sure different from any other festival I have been to. The festival itself promotes a very carefree vibe and atmosphere. They allow guest to dress however they like, including nudity. The dress code encourages funky out of the box fashion that you wouldn’t usually see.
What I loved most about the festival was the presence of so many beautiful black people. The fact that it was so crowded just proved that we as black people can support one another and come together in a positive way. Everyone was all smiles throughout the day and you can just feel a good energy, it was so contagious. I loved it!
Other than the culture, the festival is known for its amazing line up of artist year after year. In the past people like Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill, and Kelis have headlined the festival, just to name a few. This year CeeLo, Tyler the Creator and The Internet were some of the acts that hit the stage and they were AMAZING! Even when there was no artist on stage the DJs still managed to keep the vibes flowing. My personal favorite Dj of the festival was DjMoma. He had me and my friends dancing the entire time.
All in all, AfroPunk made me super proud to be black. Like I needed even more of a reason to be proud lol. It was not only an awesome party but an eye opening experience. It gave me hope and faith in my people. To see such a major festival surrounded by the African American culture made me smile. I will definitely be going again.
